Significant Incidents:

  • The South document captured the attentions of various political medias to what regards the case of verification of the Israeli withdrawal, and the treatment of its penetrations, due to the Israeli deferment, and the delay in replying to the UN in that concern.


  • UNIFIL expected yesterday, to receive the Israeli answers to the penetrations on the Lebanese border, as the three days period ended according to the pledge undertaken by UN General Secretary Kofi Annan in order to take care of the case.


  • Pursuing sources said that the absence of the Israeli response to the questions posed by Kofi Annan, and to the UNIFIL's report, is considered a violation to Annan's pledge. These sources reported that the International Organization will forward its efforts using political pressures and communications, so as to treat the border penetrations.


  • In the meantime, Lebanon continued its diplomatic campaign to effect the convention of the conference of the Granting Countries for the Reconstruction of the South, before the end of July. Lebanese Prime Minister met Ambassadors and Diplomats of the Granting Countries, so as to encircle the American objections, which stipulate the deployment of the Lebanese Army in the South in order to let way to the conference.


  • Another document that occupies the medias due to its newly existing hotness, is the electoral issue, and all what is going on, such as exchange in political attitudes, the hurried meetings, and the clear picture of alliances in some districts together with the attitude of the government towards them.


Press News:

  • Future newspaper made a long interview with MP Walid Joumblatt, focussed on the electoral issue, in which Joumblatt reminded the authorities and the ruling class not to intervene in the elections, hoping to maintain the transparency in this concern. He affirmed of announcing his list tomorrow Sunday, in Chouf, where the Sunni candidate is Mohammad Hajjar instead of Zaher El Khatib. He considered that the official talk of the pleading to accept Khatib in his list means that there exists an official direction that intervenes in the elections, opposite to what the government states. Regarding his relationship with Talal Arslan, Joumblatt said that he will leave him a seat in the list, as he had done in the previous Session. However, he had not clearly spoke of his attitude towards allying with Hezbollah and Amal Movement. Future Newspaper said that 70% of Saida's voters obtained their electoral cards, despite the motionless situation that occurs in the South towards the electoral issue. This newspaper made interviews with many Mayors who numbered many obstructions and problems in the 'crossing out' lists, which the Governor of the South promised to correct.


  • An-nahar, like all newspapers, reported of the blast of relationships that burst out inside the Phalangist Party, because of the elections. It said that the relationship between the leading figures of the Party and its many wings was outburst by the time bomb, i.e. the elections. In addition to the divergences dashing out, here and there in the Party, and the exchanged accusations between Mounir El Hajj and Karim Bakradouni, a new problem rose represented by the accusation that Laila Saadeh, wife of late ex-President of the Party Georges Saadeh, to Al Hajj of not being loyal, and announced her unchanged nomination for Batroun Maronite Seat. However, the biggest problem lies in the nomination of four of the Phalangist Party who represent different wings and currents for North Metn District, which means that the crisis continues to more aggravation.


  • As-safir described that crisis resulted by a war for the cancellation of the Phalangist Party from inside, became severe upon the election issue, in particularly in North Metn which views different Party candidates. As-safir said, concerning the Southern domain, that the UN General Secretary's special convoy Larsen will discuss with the Israeli officials, during his visit to Israel, the border penetration case. He reaffirmed that Annan insists on Israel to execute its pledge and its adherence to repair the penetrations. It mentioned that the International Observers discovered an axis that was violated by Israel in Odeisseh area, where a new Lebanese territory was annexed to Miskaf Aam colony.


  • 'Nidaa-el-watan' knew that a meeting was held between President Omar Karami and Minister Sulaiman Franjieh in Maan Karami's in Tripoli, resulted in breaking the ice between the two North poles, but had not succeeded in returning the compromise between them. The newspaper expected that the meetings continue, and quoted from sources their expectation of having Franjieh give up soon his alliance with Hariri in the North.


  • Al-liwaa made an interview regarding the electoral battle in Baabda-Aley, saying that there are 3 coalition lists, one of them is incomplete belonging to Joumblatt, the second is completed and belongs to Arslan, and the third is to Hezbollah from both sides, and is a coalition one. Al-liwaa continued that after the nomination of the Chief of Doctors Syndicate Ghattas Khoury was confirmed in Beirut on President Hariri's list, the National Mass decided nominating the ex-Chief of Lawyers Syndicate Antoine Kalimos for Beirut Maronite seat.
