Significant Incidents:

  • Three fundamental files remained in the first place of concerns today, and seized the attention of the popular and official medias. First, is a regional file, which indicates to winning of Brig. Gen. Bachar Asad in the public plebiscite for the Syrian Presidency, by 97.29%, and what is expected from him as to carry new aspects in Syria and Lebanon.


  • The medias pursued what was said of new dealing in the Lebanese arena starting after the Oath Assembly on the 17 th of this July, in addition to information regarding a new economical trend, which dashes out of the integration with Lebanon.


  • The other two files are local, the first is related to the living and social rough situation, which is expressed today through a demonstration called by General Workers Confederation, protesting the deterioration in salaries and wages, and the increase of the living burdens on all the citizens, under this high cost of living. In addition to the back-off of the services, particularly the Electrical Power crisis, where people suffered of, and led to the conviction of the Board of Directors of the Electricite Du Liban to the Court.

  • Then, remains the Southern issue, the most present in the concerns, where the political medias wait for the return of Terje Roed-Larsen tomorrow from Israel, to present his new information regarding the treatment of the Israeli violations on the Lebanese borderline.


Press News:

  • An-nahar wrote about President of the Republic, that, away from whether being a support to his son in assailing the Metn elections, or not, there exists a truth that should be believed according to the President, especially when he explains to his visitors his disgust of the climate that prevails on these elections, which pushes him to cease discussing this issue with any of the MP candidates, and to consider the Republic Presidency unconcerned with this event. An-nahar said that some candidates asked for suspending the right of voting for the newly Lebanese nationals, till the end of the appeal lawsuit in their identity, which is to be determined by the State Consulting Council.


  • As-safir, regarding the electoral issue, mentioned that many MP's started taking all their belongings from their offices in the Parliament, to their houses. They, inclusively justify this action as to their position in their electoral battle, which does not allow them to bet on re-staying in the House. This newspaper said that the attractive issue shown in most of these MP's, who stand quite on the edge of farewelling the parliamentary life, is that those of the electoral districts whose lists are still unannounced, and their alliances are still unclear, leads us obviously to deduce that the districts whose lists are still not formed, are not away from being sifted. As-safir considered that this aspect which appears even before submitting the nominations, denotes to an issue of great importance represented by the following: Reaching the semi-final winning in the elections, is connected with what the keys who establish the lists, these keys enable the candidate to predict his success, right upon announcing the lists and not after opening the ballot boxes. As-safir also noticed that the electoral operation witnesses bartering in the districts instead of sharing a unique list. As-safir said that Minister of Labor received 40 applications from huge establishments wishing to diminish their activities, such as "Bata" for shoes, which informed of its intention to close its production division, then "Malikan" the glass factory, which asked of diminishing its activity and dismissing its labors.


  • The Future newspaper followed up the situation in the North First District/Bsharrey-Dennieh-Akkar, seeing that this district does not bear surprises, especially that the coalition of the powerful needs to have the determination of the perspectives and positions of principle currents and parties. According to this newspaper the date of 20 th of July is decisive as to the extent of crystallizing the alliances which are not going to bring new news. The Future newspaper also cared for the Phalangist versus Phalangist struggle on the electoral seats, and the divisions that this Party witnesses.


  • Ad-diyar prepondered the possibility of replacing MP Nabil Boustani with his relative Attorney Bachar Boustani, even after Joumblatt's official announcement of his list.
