Significant Incidents:

  • The Southern issue, which is opened on two questions: the aids, and finalizing the Israeli violations, was advancing other concerns, and occupying the political and public environments, as new attracting action occurred by starting to remove violations in more than a location, along with the borderline. The Lebanese Monitoring Team, who is checking in the question of the violations, and whether it was dealt with, in cooperation with the International Team, noticed that Israel had been backed-off from many border points reaching the 'blue line' which was demarcated by UN. This means that Israel executed its promise, which was pledged in front of the International Envoy Terje Roed-Larsen. Meanwhile, as Larsen continues his conversations in Israel, before coming back to Lebanon, the Borderline Checking Operation resumes today, then the second stage will begin by deploying the International Troops in the South, if all the matters continued according to the arrangements done. Afterwards, UN General Secretary Kofi Annan forwards his report to Security Council in this concern, to decide what is appropriate.


  • The environments pursued, by watching, the treatment of the security accident, which took, place the day before yesterday, between Hezbollah and Amal Movement. This treatment was represented by a meeting between the leaderships of both sides, in Beau Rivage, where Syrian Monitory positions. During this meeting, it was assured of continuing the alliance and coordination between both of them, setting those responsible for that accident to prosecution at the Military Court. The environments noticed that despite this treatment, remains the security gap still jeopardizes the situation in this part of the South, which was shortly suffering after the Israeli Occupation Troops had withdrawn from, on the 24 th of last May. Furthermore, a new step drew the attention yesterday, portrayed in the handling of the government, through its Ministry of Public Health, Marjeyoun Hospital from Amal Movement.


  • Regarding the financial aids to Lebanon, all hopes backed-off yesterday, after it was perceived to have rapid financial amounts to the South through the Granting Countries. The title now became, 'not to bet on financial pledges during the decided meeting on the 27 th of this month', this was affirmed by many European sources saying that Lebanon should not build expectations which are not in their proper places, now.


  • Another headline seizing the attention, was the electoral one, which is opened on many possibilities, as alliances started to appear in many Districts, and the establishment of lists got hotter, after having determined by Minister of Interior the period for offering the nominations, and their timetable.


  • Regionally speaking, the medias watched attentively the 'Oath Speech' by President Bachar Asad, swearing the constitutional oath, particularly the point indicating to Lebanon, renewing his support on all levels.


Press News:

  • An-nahar said that the ruling authority would not make a mistake by interfering in the failure of some leading figures in the legislative elections, as the matter will stand only at penetrating lists in some electoral Districts. It also found that the picture of the legislative elections during the year 2000, was portrayed two months before its exploitation, in most Districts. It continued, that no surprises are going to happen in most Districts, and that the electoral battle will reach the extent of battles only in: Aley-Baabda and Metn Districts in Mount Lebanon, and Beirut Second and Third Districts, in addition to the battle which might take place in the North, between the alliance of Mikati-Franjieh and President Omar Karami. An-nahar said that the new Parliament will stay in the same specifications as those of 92 and 96, and in the same regional motives.


  • As-safir, considered that Beirut City is again the focus of the political electoral battle, where the poles, competing on the Capital Decision Referee, own various weapons, all are effective, but could not be used, as then the door opens on restitutions, which would be requested by all. But, according to this newspaper, each party works for achieving his interest, where the political limits of the picture in Beirut elections are represented through the three poles: Hariri, Hoss and Salam, without neglecting the role and size of others. So, the Beiruti electorate views various conflicts regarding this seat or that, provided that he accurately determines the quality of the adversaries.


  • The Future newspaper reported the appointments for submitting the nomination applications for the legislative elections, as was announced by Minister Michel Murr, in addition to the required documents from the candidate, and the date of withdrawal, if happened, in all Districts. This newspaper, made also, an interview with MP Elie Skaff, who prepares to announce his electoral list under the title of 'Popular Mass List', which includes him with Nicola Fattouch, Mohsin Dalloul, Mohammad Ali Maiss,Khalil Hrawi, Georges Kassarji, and Mikhael Debs instead of Chawki Fakhoury. Future Newspaper made also, an interview with MP Alaeddine Terro who said that the list of National Struggle in Chouf, is stable till the end, expecting a very hot battle in Chouf, indicating to the alliance of Socialist Party with Future, which will have a political and prosperous echo.
