Significant Incidents:

  • The matter of the Israeli border penetrations remained occupying the local official and popular medias, between the ebb and flow that this document undergoes after having 2 days passed on the deadline of the pledge undertaken by UN General Secretary so as to treat all the penetrations. Neither of the above had occurred, and the situation remained untreated on ground.

  • Against such reality, the International Security Council convenes to discuss the report issued by the General Secretariat regarding the penetrations and the whole situation in the South. Meanwhile, the International convoy, Terje Roed Larsen, set off his trip to the Region, to treat rapidly the matter and to effect communication with all the relative parties.

  • Pursuing medias said that Lebanon requests an open attitude from UN General Secretary towards the Israeli border penetrations so as to remove them. In the meantime, the Lebanese diplomacy continued its action to give way to the convention of the Granting Countries before the end of this month. President of the Republic Emile Lahhoud expressed his attitude, in a message he worded in "Gran Montana" Club, defining three steps to terminate the era of conflicts in the Region, starting from the removal of all the penetrations, then the withdrawal from Golan, ending with the return of the Palestinian refugees.

  • Whilst all the aforesaid, the electoral issue remained within the circle of care of various medias, where new stations appeared regarding the nomination and competition. However, the electoral hotness is high in Beirut and the Mountain, particularly in Baabdat and Chouf, in addition to the North, whereas the battle in the South remains calm up to this hour.

Press News:

  • Future newspaper held a wide interview with Vice President of the Communist Party Saadallah Mazraani regarding the program of the Party and its situation in the South. It also made an interview regarding the parliamentary life in Chouf since 1943, i.e. beginning with the battle of the Constitutional Party with the Bloc, reaching the Ally and Method Parties, showing that many currents elapsed and many faces disappeared, but what still remained was the Joumblattism. The Newspaper pursued also the Candidates' activities in Beirut, of the Dignity list supported by President Rafic Hariri, where Chief of Syndicate of Doctors Ghattas Khoury called for fortifying this electoral event. Future newspaper drew the attention to the set off of the electoral committees of Zahrani and Jezzine related to Amal Movement by MP Ayoub Hemayyed who considered that the Liberation list will be complete this year in the electoral operation.

  • An-nahar, wrote a subject concerning the file of elections, where the son of President of the Republic Emile Lahhoud is nominated, but with the awareness and confirmation of the President not to support his son for the seat which his grandfather had twice won in 1960 and 1964. The activities of Lahhoud Junior reflect a point of view that seems completely different to what the President expressed in front of the Syndicate of Editors, and his meetings with the MP's, that no candidate is on his account, and that he does not support any candidate. An-nahar also mentioned that the pressures began to be much heavier on imposing coalition electoral lists in the electoral districts where led by opposing candidates.

  • As-safir mentioned that UN acts cautiously toward the file of the border. UN is not limiting the question to the Lebanese remarks, but looks at it from a wider corner of view, having in its consideration the Israeli attitude towards this question. As-safir said that it looks so difficult for the Great countries whose roles are operative, to leave UN play alone a role, which they, themselves, could not afford playing. The newspaper warned of the fears that contribute to the possibility of using the UN as a cover to the Great countries to work out their policies and plans.

  • Ad-diyar followed-up the file of the disturbances that took place in Chouf which were connected to the electoral operation, beginning with the shooting at the candidate Elias Nakhleh, reaching the news conference made by Arslan's consultant Wiaam Wahhab, all within official silence. The newspaper said that the situation resembles the 'two-years war', and that the secret accords between the Leading figures and the militias still exist, on the account of people's lives.

  • 'Al-kifah el-arabi', away from the electoral domain, wondered of the benefit gained of having the government sold its shares in the MEA, and to what extent does this action of privatization serve the State's benefits. Would the Cedar that was the MEA realized logo disappear from its fleet?

  • Al-Anwar continued its report regarding the electoral issue, speaking of Keserwan and Jbeil, where the lists and alliances wait the point of view of the National Bloc.
