Significant Incidents:

  • Popular and official medias are waiting for the results of the visit paid by UN Special Envoy Terje Roed-Larsen to Beirut and the Region, accompanied by the Head of UN Map Experts, to treat the Israeli penetrations and to achieve the final verification of the withdrawal from the South for implementing Resolution 425.


  • While those medias feared of the failure of Larsen's trip and the continued existence of the penetrations; local, regional and international movements attracted the observers' attention to the possibility of having such ebb and tide motion lead to shaking the situation in the South, if no urgent decisions were taken for the quick deployment of UNIFIL and the Lebanese Army in the liberated regions.


  • The continuous optimism was expressed by the medias for resolving the Question of penetrations, based on the newly opened relationship between Larsen and the Lebanese government, in addition to International points of view which were announced during Ihud Barak's quick European visit yesterday, affirming on maintaining calmness on the border and treating the penetrations.


  • Regarding the issue of the conference of the Granting Countries, it seemed that the latter is postponed to an unknown date, after the new American assault revealed by its Foreign Minister Albright declaring that the aids for Lebanon are connected with the deployment of the Lebanese Army in the South.


  • Other files locally busied the medias, beginning with the arousing disputes on the topic of uniting the ministries and councils, and its relationship with the legislative elections, inciting its hotness, in addition to the attitude of the Maronite Clergymen Council against the events occurring on the whole Lebanese situation and the living one which is opened to all possibilities.

  • An-nahar viewed new climate between Lebanon and Larsen, and quoted a diplomatic preponderance to a future prevail of an easy climate, as UN showed lately, its adoption of the Lebanese point of view towards the Israeli violations. It also expressed its belief that Barak's aim, out of the border violations, does not exceed the Israeli fear of having the colonies been exposed to the Lebanese border.


  • The Future newspaper quoted from official sources that Lebanon received from UN, last May, new aspects through Leader of UNIFIL indicating to the trend to consider a new withdrawal line, which differs from the blue line by 6 points. The Newspaper continued pursuing the electoral issue in Bekaa, saying that MP Elias Skaff will announce his list in Zahleh without MP Chawki Fakhoury unless new technical details emerge in this concern. Regarding the electoral card and the 'crossing out' lists, Future newspaper said that the correction of such lists had not reached West Bekaa, eventually, the dead people are going to vote in accordance to these lists! As for Jezzine the electorates acquiring the electoral cards were 7000 out of 50 thousand electorates.


  • As-safir wondered whether Lebanon is going to recheck the border blue line upon having Israel achieves removing the penetrations and the UN admittance of Israel being penetrated this line only. The Newspaper saw that Lebanon will not request the deployment of UNIFIL, as all believe, but it will declare its right in the territories that are still under occupation, leaving their liberation to the Resistance, as the diplomatic efforts allowed regaining the blue line only. Locally speaking, As-safir considered that the general political crisis squeezed the government in the bottle-head, facing a bunch of problems such as the Electrical Power, the employees etc. All these were enforced to blast through the debates relating to the issue of uniting ministries and councils, in addition to the privatization of Electricity, and the increase in its tariffs.


  • 'Al-kifah el-arabi' said that the Interior Ministry's staff was busy in preparing to confront the coming workers' demonstration.


  • 'Nidaa el-watan' wondered inquiring whether MP Walid Joumblatt began his coup-d'etat against Syria, his yesterday's ally? It queries on the secret real reason for Joumblatt's timing of his late declarations, if it was not expressed as a 'coup d'etat'? The Newspaper hoped that the situation does not embarrass Syria being on the gate of a public Plebiscite.
