Significant Incidents:

  • The death of the Syrian President Hafez Asad, and the power transformation in Syria to his son Bachar remained the main title that occupied all political, official and popular media. Most of the Lebanese leaderships crossed to Damascus, for condolence and sharing in the protocol of late President Asad's funeral.


  • The lights on that news covering the quiet transformation of power in Syria had not shaded the issue of verifying the Israeli withdrawal from the South, where the UN team continued with Lebanese Army officials surveying the withdrawal line. Meanwhile, President of the Republic Emile Lahhoud sent a memo to UN General Secretary, protesting on the way the demarcation took place as some Lebanese territories remained under the Israeli domination.

  • An-nahar quoted from a diplomatic source that what concerns the UN is not the increase in the number of International troops, their arms and potentials, but in the information that reflects the Lebanese government's attitude towards some matters, first of which the deployment of the Lebanese Army, and Hezbollah's weapons, in addition to the period it takes for the existence of such troops and the attitude towards the Truce Agreement.


  • The Middle East newspaper had a talk with Dr. Bachar Asad before his father's death, speaking about three specifications for him to be nominated to the Presidency, and about Lebanon, the Israeli withdrawal, and the Resistance.


  • Al-hayat published a text by the British author Patrick Sil who wrote the late Asad's biography and his successor, considering that the developed countries had never seen a quiet transformation of power, on such high level of discipline. Late President was aware of avoiding divisions and problems, and availing a legal transformation operation in the country. Sil exposed in his quotation the role of Bachar Asad, and the forces that are relied on in Syria: the Army establishment, the intelligence, the security forces, new leaderships, and the Alawites sect. Al-hayat had a permission from Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk Sharaa to publish a text that President Asad wrote before dying, stressing on the role that the deceased had played.


  • Future newspaper visited Kardaha village, the place of late Syrian President, and met his classmates and friends of childhood, who spoke of him. It also newly published a talk to Syrian Minister of Defense Maj. Gen.Mustapha Tlass who considered that the mechanism of power transformation is taking place smoothly, saying that Syria looks forward to establish economical plans in Lebanon as the latter is a strategic market to Syria.


  • As-safir drew the attention to the grief that covers Syria, whereas at the same time the situation is calm, without falling in any defect that would harm the image of the country. As-safir said that American Foreign Minister Albright had incited the issue of the deployment of Lebanese Army twice in the past, one through a telephone call with the President of Republic Maj. Gen. Emile Lahhoud, and the other, during her meeting in Cairo with the Syrian Minister Farouk Charaa.


  • All the newspapers today mentioned the three days vacation that the Lebanese government announced, starting from today, where all the official establishments in addition to the schools and universities close, and ending on Thursday morning.
