Significant Incidents:

  • The political media was busy in seeing off the funeral of Deceased President Hafez Asad, and in the following up of its participation together with the International and Arabic delegations in this funeral ceremony, which reached 14 Kings, and Presidents, and 100 Foreign delegations, noticing the size of the presence of Lebanese political and popular officials. The media drew the attention to the respectful Farewell funeral of Late President, and the participation of hundreds of thousands who escorted him to his last burial place, where entire Syria walked ahead, from Damascus to Kardaha. This scene was transformed to homing Bachar.


  • In adjacency, the concern was focussed on the political side of the seeing off the funeral, where observers noticed the American attitude expressed by the head of the delegation in the seeing off, Foreign Minister Madeleine Albright, who had said, after meeting Bachar Asad, that the latter is firmly holding the situation, and is self- controlled. Whereas France was distinguished in its high representation through its President Jack Chirac's presence, who was the only west president visiting Syria to share in the Late President's funeral. The media pursued the changes in Israel, after having the present government split, due to the withdrawal of the religious Chass Party and the situation of Prime Minister Barak, which could not be envied, as the Region is passing through categorical turn-points regarding the Peace Process, after the departure of President Asad, in addition to having Barak lost the majority in the Knesset.


  • In the file of the South, it was noticed that the verification operation of the Israeli withdrawal and the demarcation of the border were stopped after having the Lebanese Team apologized, in the name of its head Lt. Gen. Amin Hteit, of leading this force, due to being occupied in participating in the seeing off Late Syrian President.

  • An-nahar mentioned that observers say that the nature of the relations with Syria was expressed on the level of high representation, and by all people in the State, during President Asad's funeral, and said that the international focus on the Lebanese file shows that there are Lebanese bets on a new page of relations by the reign of Brigadier General Bachar Asad. An-nahar spoke of the economical challenges that Syria confronts today, openly and reforming each stage, saying that it is required to increase its investment share from 100 million dollars to 4 billions. An-nahar mentioned regarding the electoral issue, that President Hariri prepared an electoral program to the candidates of his mass in the three Beirut Districts, and is going to declare it in a Press Conference. It also published an investigation about Abbasieh village in Tyre, which has 3 hospitals, in addition to educational and cultural places, saying that this village looks forward to the projects that are over its capacities. The newspaper also presented a report concerning Awwali River, which became a duct for sanitary discharge.


  • Al-hayat focussed on the Saudi-Yemeni Border Agreement, and the reactions in both countries, considering that it is more than a border accord. Al-hayat described the seeing off Asad's funeral to be transformed to a popular homing and foreign support to Bachar.


  • Future newspaper presented a special interview with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saoud El Fayassal who was participating in seeing off President Asad, expressing his optimism and assurance for Bachar Asad taking charge of Power in Syria, pointing to the way that power was transmitted which shows that nothing is going to stop in Syria, whether on the level of internal reformations or regarding Peace Process. Future newspaper mentioned that the substantial support of the countries granting aid to the reconstruction of the South would not be ready before the deployment of the International Troops in the liberated districts. This newspaper published an investigation about the American anti-missiles armors, considering them as a return to a new bomb arming. It also presented the final text of the project of Aged Sanitary Security, and another about Bint Jbeil village or "the House of Sun" which returned to the Lebanese Republic.
