Mourning remained bounding Syria and Lebanon, in the midst of the continuance of condolences and demonstrations supporting Dr. Bachar Asad, where all the Lebanese official and popular personalities advanced to Syria to present the duty of condolences.

  • While the American President Bill Clinton praised the Late President's personality, wishing a swift action regarding the Syrian-Israeli track and the continuity of Peace Process, a French attitude emerged, expressed by French Foreign Minister Hubert Vidrine, where all Press agencies quoted, doubting of the ability of Asad's son to cope with the Syrian situation and to maintain stability. This attitude was strictly denied by French Foreign Ministry, issuing a report denying what the Agencies had reported of declarations quoted from the French Minister.

  • The continuation of caring for Syria's future, two days before the meeting to be convened in the Conference of Al Baath Leadership, had not covered the issue of verifying the Israeli withdrawal from the South, where International and Lebanese official soldiers are performing so. Slow motion was noticed in verifying the withdrawal in compliance with Resolution 425, as 55 Kilometers remained in need of checking, whereas a Lebanese Officer reported that the Checking operation discovered 6 Israeli penetrations till yesterday, the last of which was the block of Maiss El Jabal.

  • A source expected that the International Convoy's report regarding the verification of the withdrawal might be completed, on Saturday after tomorrow, i.e. before the tour that UN General Secretary Kofi Annan pays to the Region, next Sunday, which lasts eight days.

  • To that, the Lebanese Council of Ministers holds its meeting today, and on its timetable lies a term that issues the agreement on the Decision of sending a mixed force of Army (Deterrent and Military Police Forces) and Interior Security Forces, which will be charged of security keeping in the liberated districts.

  • An-nahar opened the economical file of the pre-occupied district, through a wide report, mentioning the exhausted villages that returned to Lebanon after 22 years of occupation, as their inhabitants, which makes this return as a challenge to the government, especially on the economical level. • Future newspaper who celebrates its first year of foundation, quoted from big Islamic reference that big difference exists between the Syrian and Egyptian experience, pointing to the political revolution in Egypt after President Jamal Abdul Nasser's departure, and considering that Syria's relation with USA is not negative, but is delicately well-knitted, and that Bachar's leadership is not obliged to offer any 'giving ups', as in Egypt at the time of Sadat. This newspaper mentioned that an agreement took place with the International Red Cross to handle Marjeyoun Hospital for three months, paying the expenses and its employees' salaries, until the Minister of Health completes its study and capacities to receive this hospital and to absorb its departments.

  • As-safir mentioned that Lebanon, according to a diplomatic report, has worries, anxieties and concerns regarding the pressure imposed on it to accelerate the border verification operation, and to similar pressures imposed on UNIFIL force regarding the same issue. As-safir said that Lebanese officials have little confidence in Annan's tour to be exactly fruitful, if the question of verification is not decided. A UN diplomat disclosed to As-safir that debate exists in Lebanon regarding the deployment of the International Force, after terminating the verification operation, and that UN is being put in the atmosphere of a Lebanese security plan based on a deployment that would not reach the International border line, avoiding to fall in the ambush of border guarding. And that the International Force applies the same in its troops deployment along the borders, but in a way that does not benefit Israel and be a guard to its border. As-safir published the most important political report that is submitted on Saturday to the Eighth Conference of AL Baath Party in Syria. This report was prepared by a Party council headed by Syrian Vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam. It was supposed to be presented to Late President on past Sunday to proofread it before being printed. As-safir reported of the 'As-samah Park' Project (Forgiveness Park) in the Center of the Town, whose area reaches 23 thousand square meters. This project, according to As-safir, faced objections from some sides regarding its name, and discussions are run to substitute it. There are suggestions for some, due to the effects that such name incites the reserves and hurts many's feelings.
