Significant Incidents:

  • The main file that busies today official and popular Lebanon, with all the political media, is the issue of the verification of Israeli withdrawal from the South. After accomplishing the field checking and the emergence of Israeli infractions in many border locations, UN General Secretary declared, in a sudden act, that Israel completed its withdrawal from Lebanon in compliance with Resolution 425. Annan's declaration echoed Lebanese reactions, especially that it concurred, according to a Lebanese military source, with the meeting convened between the International Surveying team, and the Lebanese team, to define the points of the Israeli penetration, and how to treat them. The first reaction and attitude came by the Lebanese Prime Minister Dr. Salim Hoss, who said that Israel did not withdraw completely from the Lebanese territories, and that the Lebanese government calls UN to consider the Lebanese point of view, regretting what Annan had declared. At the Lebanese opposing action, UN General Secretary declared of sending his convoy, Terje Roed-Larsen to Lebanon, today, to treat the affair, and some pending gaps. Meanwhile a French point of view took place, calling UN to take the Lebanese notices and oppositions into consideration.


  • With the South file, remains also, the Syrian issue, after the President Hafez Asad's departure, as one of the files that occupy the political media, who followed-up attentively the special preparations for the Ninth Conference of Al-Baath Party Leadership, that convenes in Damascus, today, and the expected changes resulted from, in the respect of the leadership level, and political and economical levels, in addition to the confirmation of transforming the power to Brigadier General Bachar Asad, and his appointment in the General Secretary of the Party. On ground, the popular demonstrations continued in Lebanon and Syria, supporting Brigadier General Bachar Asad, and confirming him of their loyalty. Delegations kept crawling to Syria for condolences, and a crowdy demonstration took place, yesterday in Beirut, in which words were pronounce confirming the support to Syria and the accompaniment of the two tracks.


Press News:

  • An-nahar wondered, in its opening page article: "Would a new problem arise between Lebanon and UN, at the overnight of General Secretary Kofi Annan's visit", pointing to the tensed atmospheres between both side. An-nahar quoted from Lebanese media, describing Annan's declaration as being hasty, unless he secures the Israeli withdrawal from 6 points considered as penetrations inside the Lebanese territories. It published the Lebanese team's statement regarding the penetrations, which were 13, naming them with their areas. It also, published a report of Al Abbassieh that is liberated after 33 years of occupation, with which Lebanon regained 4200 Donums of territory. Then, An-nahar presented a report of Aley international roads, saying that each minute passes a huge truck, which threatens the condition of the district roads and buildings.


  • Future newspaper said that UN General Secretary called French President by phone, discussing the Question of the verification of the Israeli withdrawal. Whereas Chirac reaffirmed that the International Troops should deploy to assist the Lebanese government in regaining its power and domination in the South. It also quoted from its Correspondent in Paris, what the French Minister of Defense Richard, said that there is no need to increase the number of the International Force in the South. Future newspaper reported that citizens subscribe to the Cellular phones, where, at the same time, lie 600 thousand ordinary unused lines "under the ground". It also reminded that a year had passed since the Israeli Aggression against the Electrical Power Station, and the repairing works are still unachieved. This newspaper published a report regarding the National Office for De-mining, which continued its missions indicating to the existence of 821 mine fields in Lebanon, excluding those of the liberated districts. Then, the School Fees were the title of the educational report by Future newspaper, pointing to the conflict between the schools, the parents, and the teachers, at the closing of the school year.


  • As-safir focussed on the Conference of Arab Socialist Baath Party in Syria, exposing group of documents that are related to the works of this conference. Then, it reported in a room, the Lebanese opposition against the UN General Secretary 's declaration regarding the Israeli implementation of Resolution 425.


  • Nidaa-el-watan reported of the chemical poisoned materials that Israel pushes towards the Lebanese seashores, as a result of the wastes coming from the factories, indicating to their danger.


  • Al-liwaa focussed on the increase in the price of Benzene tin to reach LL.16, 500, and indicated to the problems in Electricity and Telephones.
