Significant Incidents:

  • The visit of UN General Secretary Kofi Annan to Lebanon caught the attention of the official and popular environments, due to the stances that it bore and the new developments that occurred after the Lebanese opposition to Annan's declaration of the completion of Israeli withdrawal and implementation of Resolution 425, and not considering the Lebanese remarks. Noting that these remarks were referred to, in the International Security Council's Decision which certified the withdrawal, indicating to the dangerous violations that were recorded after 16 th of current June.


  • After the meetings that were held by UN General Secretary with President of the Republic Emile Lahhoud, and Prime Minister Salim Hoss, Annan received Lebanese reaffirmations on clinging to the territories that were clearly penetrated by Israel, in addition to considering the Israeli withdrawal as incomplete, which leads to linger more time in demanding for the deployment of the International forces in order to achieve further complete penetration treatment.


  • Annan considered that Lebanon could handle the matter to the International Security Council to discuss any possible penetration, confirming that the International team still works on ground to check such penetrations, so as to treat them, and that UN will continues to work on these checking and treatments.


  • UN General Secretary ends his visit to Lebanon today, by a meeting to be held with Hezbollah General Secretary Sayyed Hasan Nassrallah, discussing series of matters, and in the first place: the issue of exchanging prisoners with repatriate bodies of Israeli soldiers that were killed in Lebanon.


  • Another file that had also captured the care of environments, was the conclusion of the Conference of Al-Baath Leadership in Syria, today, which confirms electing Brig. Gen. Bachar Asad as Country Secretary, plus the reports that will be issued, including those that relates to Lebanon.

  • An-nahar denoted to the legislative elections, saying that when voters vote on the basis of considering the electoral campaigns, they abandon the sectarian considerations, which then avoids the presence of a parliamentary majority of sects based on numerous concerns. So, when the political sectarianism is cancelled, however the numerous concerns would be then, contributed to a national majority who will have a political line, resembling the situation that was existing in the country when it was divided into two blocs. The newspaper showed a report on the liberated Deir Mimas village and the environmental problems that it suffers of.


  • As-safir considered that Annan's visit to Beirut had not contributed to remove the Lebanese concern against the International General Security's Report which certified the Israeli withdrawal from the South as complete and complying with Resolution 425. It appeared from the words that Annan expressed that UN is continuing its executive paces that are connected with the mechanism of Resolution 425. It also mentioned that UN General Secretary is arranging to appoint his special convoy residing in Beirut for a period that may reach to a year, handling the responsibility of dealing with the Lebanese government in order to follow-up the details of implementing the two Resolutions 425, and 426. As-safir had an interview with the Governor of Central Bank Riad Salameh in which he considered that no 'money-whitening' exists in Lebanon, and that the Bank formed a Committee for that concern to follow-up the operations. Salameh assured that the problem of Al-Inaash Bank had been resolved, after having the Sharers settled their liabilities. As-safir also had an interview with Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk Charaa, in which he simplified the atmosphere covering the Conference of Al-Baath Party, and the attitude towards Lebanon, indicating to the renewal, and the fight against corruption, in addition to the full support to Lebanon.


  • 'Al-kifah al-arabi' mentioned that responsible figures asked for an investigation to be made with some Security Forces' officials regarding their responsibility of the accident that took place in Zokak El Blatt, the day before yesterday.


  • Ad-diyar called the Arab Foreign Ministers to initiate for a Ministerial meeting discussing and supporting the Lebanese position. Ad-diyar feared of transforming the relation between Beirut and UN to a point that might have no healing, especially that Lebanon used to have a permanent positive relationship with the International Organization.
