Significant Incidents:

  • Still the questions of the verification of withdrawal, and treating the Israeli penetrations, capture the attention of political medias, while UN General Secretary Kofi Annan waits for ending these subjects yesterday, as the International Forces achieve their final report after Israel repairs the border situation and treats the violations.


  • It appeared that the checking operations had not been completely accomplished. The Lebanese team had not set off to the border waiting to be informed of the accomplished works on the Israeli bank. But, sources see possibility of having the Lebanese team pay a look today, to be assured of existing treatment works, so as to record a report in this concern. Chief of the Lebanese team, General Amin Hoteit, clarified that he will re-check on ground, to prove whether the penetrations wipe off operation really happened or not.


  • Meanwhile, General Secretary Kofi Annan ended his regional trip, which lasted 8 days, lately in Damascus. He expressed, before leaving the Syrian capital, of his hope to be furnished with a report declaring the conclusion of the checking operations and the treatment of the penetrations, during his pass by visit in Europe


  • Annan had declared from Damascus, that his conversations with Brig. Gen. Bachar Asad dealt with the situation in the South, and the efforts taken to assure calmness in order to treat the penetrations in the soonest time possible. He clarified that he asked the International Forces in the South to start issuing weekly reports regarding any violation that might occur, affirming that these reports would be held to Security Council and to both the Lebanese and Israeli sides.


  • Syria also confirmed, through its Foreign Minister Farouk Charaa, its support to the Lebanese fair demands in claiming for a full comprehensive withdrawal till the International-recognized borders. Syria expressed its satisfaction of UN's and General Secretary's attitude.


  • In the internal domain, the concern is drawn towards the legislative elections that are fixed on 20 th of the coming August, where medias got occupied with new developments, alliances, and agglomerations into different districts.


Press News:

  • Future newspaper mentioned that Kuwait promised to construct 8 Southern villages, which were mostly harmed by the Israeli occupation, and to provide them with the necessary infrastructure. The villages are: Sojod, Hanin, Ain Arab, Yarin, Rshaf, Al-Tiri, Konin, Beit Yahoun. Kuwaiti promise came after its demand to know the way using the grant of US$. Twenty million so as to implement it in this purpose. Regarding the electoral domain, Future newspaper mentioned that MP Nadim Salem, the candidate of Jezzine District, tends to ally with the ex-MP Habib Sadek and in his list, and communications are made by Salem to be connected with President Kamel Al-Asaad's current, but the latter is absent of sight till now. The newspaper also indicated that MP Walid Joumblatt affirmed, during his visit to West Bekaa and Rachaya, and meeting the MP's of the districts, especially his opponent Fayssal El Daoud, that he has no candidate in this district, and his visit only calls for opening a new page. Future newspaper also presented a report regarding the electoral developments in the South, considering that South elections, after liberation, does not bear any new change, the coalitions are still the same. The newspaper said that Samir El Jisr, Hariri's candidate in the North, announced that his nomination is a political decision, whereas MP Musbah Al-Ahdab confirmed his alliance with Al-Jisr and Ahmad Karami.


  • An-nahar pursued the electoral issue in the North, and Minister Najib Mikati's announcement of nominating himself in the North Second District, which includes Tripoli-Al Minieh-Zghorta-Koura-Batroun. It added that Mikati dashed the slogan saying "Choose and then Question", in his press conference held yesterday, and that his relationship with Hariri tends to intersect as Hariri withdrew his candidate Samir Al-Jisr, saying that doors are still opened between Karami and Franjieh.


  • As-safir followed-up MP Habib's nomination in a press conference in Saida city, as he said that the list of the Democratic current will dart off within weeks with new names and alliances.


  • Al-anwar said that Lebanon clings to the Banking Secrecy, justifying its accusing of 'money whitening' as an attempt to overwhelm it, so as to amend its Banking Regime. The newspaper also pursued the electoral developments in North Second District, affirming that the existing estrangement between Karami and Franjieh pushes the situation to a dear confrontation in this District.


  • 'Nidaa el-watan' said that Hariri's alliance affair in Tripoli is similar to that in Zghorta, where President Omar Karami confirmed his alliance with MP Nayla Mouawwad facing Franjieh.


  • Al-liwaa quoted an information from a leading Minister that a new candidate in Beirut First District daily talks with a great country's Ambassador.


  • 'Al-kifah al-arabi' mentioned that Ex-President Elias Hrawi requested from MP Elias Skaff to register Beirut previous Governor in his Zahle electoral list.
